The National Crafts Museum was established in 1956 with an idea of showcasing the traditional and the upcoming modern creative work. It is located at Bhairon road, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. It is one of India’s largest crafts museums and it houses paintings, crafts of clay, embroidery, textiles, stone and wood articles.
What makes the museum so attractive and unique is the village look that it possesses. Thatched roofs, wooden carvings, mud huts and craftsmen at work are some of the elements that add to the rural ambience of the place.
Designed as a replica of a typical Indian village, this museum also has on display, the work done by different tribal groups from Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and other places. In the calm and peaceful environment of the National Crafts Museum, the work on display tell us a lot about the skills of those, who have created such sublime work. There are not only indoor galleries which showcase the creativity, but there is also a huge complex with a sound environment that does not let the visitors take their eyes off the beautifully created village shrine.
The museum is divided into five different galleries, namely Bhuta Sculpture Gallery, Tribal & Folk Art, Ritual Craft Gallery, Courtly Craft Gallery and Textile Gallery.
The visitors can not only gaze at the work, but can also buy whatever they like, from the shop in the complex.
